A summer’s walk through Betty Ford Alpine Gardens, Vail, Colorado, is simply magical. Framed by spruce and aspen, these tall, back-lit spikes of Foxtail Lilies top a group of pink and orange poppies with a smattering of happy, little Himalayan Geraniums at their feet. Hiking above Logan Pass, Glacier National Park, to Hidden Lake Pass, the near-timberline meadows are scattered with cheery, yellow Avalanche or Glacier Lilies and occasional mountain goats. The wildflowers spill to the edge of the cliffs overlooking Hidden Lake, so alluring in its deep blue, scattered islands and far-side trails, that the lakeshore below was our next destination, despite grizzly bear warnings. Returning from a long day exploring in the Canadian Rockies, our drive home from Jasper to Moraine Lake Lodge took us along the Icefields Parkway and meandering Bow River. Almost out of daylight the landscape was transformed into many soft shades of muted purple, lavender and blue creating such a sense of utter quiet and stillness. This sense of calm was only interrupted by the remnants of sun brilliantly gleaming across the many zigzagging water channels creating linear, ribbon patterns of light across the broad river plain.
