Collaborating closely with this collector prompted some fun on the slopes as we considered the layout and that feeling of cutting the first tracks through dreamy west coast powder. Sketches, final drawings, display materials and lighting were all discussed thoroughly. Truly one of my most enjoyed pieces to date.

This sculpture of a lilac breasted roller originally appeared in print for an inflight magazine in Europe before being framed and juried into and shown in both The Society of Animal Artists 57th Annual Art and the Animal Exhibition show and later in the 2018 Artists for Conservation show in Vancouver.

Client requests continue to open doors and foster new friendships. Suggested by a client who was also an esteemed hornbill researcher, the idea positively propelled us through sketching and various phases via email as the sculpture took shape in the studio. To preserve the character of the bird and maintain the classic look of white and off-white, we felt that the use of a shimmering Japanese hand made paper for the dark markings was a great choice. Great fun! Great hornbills.

One of my favourite approaches in the studio is to create backyard birds of varying species who are playfully clinging to the mats. Some are sculpted in white while others are shown in a three or four step greyscale using select papers. Commission requests accepted!

Working directly with clients on specific moments and memories has provided some of my most satisfying sculptures. Inspired by the story, the layout and pattern drawings evolved. Increasing the chance for this little guy to escape by placing the hooves over the mat felt like the right thing to do. Run little guy! Run!
