Cycling home at the end of a painting day, I am traveling west toward the Tucson Mountains, and up ahead I can see a dramatic, cloud-filled, sundown sky after a desert winter storm. From past experience, I know that we often have striking sunsets in both directions, as the setting sun sets off color across the Catalina Mountains behind me in the east. Over New Years, snow had blanketed Monument Valley creating stunning lavender and blue snow shadows set against brilliant, warm white snow in sunshine, all contrasted against the dramatic red rock cliff monuments. Our goal for our second hike of the day in Glacier National Park was to hike from atop Hidden Lake Pass down to the shores of shimmering Hidden Lake and hopefully glimpse where the outlet stream dropped precipitously to the valley below.
