On a pack trip in the northern Rockies, we were up early to explore the near-timberline slopes and lakeshore. Our hiking boots didn’t stay dry for long, as a spiderweb of little streamlets criss-crossed all around us, fed by the snowfields above. At the base of Fremont and Vail Pass in the Colorado Rockies, a short section of this bike trail that we ride many times a week has an absolute profusion of wildflowers in July and August. It is such a color surprise and so dramatic, bikers and people walking the trail often stop to take photos of these huge mounds of billowing, yellow daisies sprinkled with sky-blue flax and occasional spikes of magenta-purple penstemon.
