Beyond All Roads
ROSS BUCKLAND

Although little of our wilderness remains undiscovered, much of it is still very much inaccessible by convenient land routes. And so, for very good reasons, most roads towards the untamed backcountry end at the water’s edge. From there, one must continue by canoe, or floatplane and oftentimes both. Fortunately, for those who have the desire, spirit and thirst, adventure can still be found and is waiting beyond all roads.

Leaving In The Morning
ROSS BUCKLAND
oil on board
16 x 20 inches (L x W)
'It had turned out to be a wonderful summer. The flies, the bears and the arthritis all seemed to stay away and really weren’t much trouble at all. The fishing had been incredible. He managed to finish another Hemingway while she worked on her painting…she was getting quite good at it. Their old friends Mardy and Olaus were able to stop by and spent a night on their way back down to Wyoming. And for the first time, all of the grandchildren were able to visit. That was the best.
The oldest son was now back with the Beaver… made it in just after the snow. He’d spend this last night helping them secure the cabin for winter. Except for the canoe, the airplane was loaded and ready for the trip out. One more Alaskan supper with the folks and, more reluctantly than ever, they’d be leaving in the morning.'

Quality Time
ROSS BUCKLAND
oil on board
18 x 24 inches (L x W)
The accumulated experience of an aviator is accurately recorded in logbooks as hours. But it is more passionately recalled in terms of ‘time’. One may have logged over five thousand hours, but will more fondly tell stories of tailwheel time or multi time or turbine time. The most fortunate will have float time.
This painting features deHavilland Canada Beaver no.1 CF-FHB in Pacific Western markings. This aircraft is currently on display at the Canada Aviation snd Space Museum in Ottawa.

‘Casablanca’ has always been one of my favourite movies and I have for a long time wanted to depict one of the final scenes. Years ago, there were plans to ‘colourize’ this classic black and white film. I never thought that was a good idea and so it was actually a struggle to add the warm colours to this painting.
